Avengers: Endgame left great moments to remember for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but if there was one that sparked more than one cheer in theaters it was seeing Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans) raising the Mjölnir. The Sentinel of Liberty became the wielder of the mighty hammer to defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin). Surely you have thought that the character was always worthy of him, but the writers of Endgame have revealed what it was that actually made him lift it.

A fan, during the viewing of the film made by ComicBook on the occasion of the film's anniversary, asked the writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely if he was always worthy of the Mjölnir. Specifically, the Twitter user has recalled the Avengers: Age of Ultron game in which superheroes tried to raise the hammer. "When Steve nearly lifted the hammer in Avengers 2: Did he choose not to or was he not worthy until the reveal in Civil War and is he able to raise it now?" If you remember The Age of Ultron, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) does not do many thanks to seeing how the Mjölnir rises a few millimeters from the table he is leaning on when Steve Rogers tries to catch him.

"I would say it is not completely worthy. He has yet to solve the secret of Tony's parents' death, ”the writers respond. In Captain America: Civil War it is revealed that Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) murdered the parents of Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) while being manipulated by HYDRA. Therefore, according to Markus and McFeely, it was not until the Freedom Sentinel resolved his differences with Tony Stark that he was worthy.
However, this differs from what other members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have said. Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Endgame, said that Captain America was always worthy of raising the Mjölnir. "Our interpretation of the famous Age of Ultron scene was that when he realized he could lift the Mjölnir, he quickly decided not to because he did not want to embarrass Thor," explained Anthony Russo. Joss Whedon, director of the sequel to the superhero team, has already said something similar. Specifically, he stated that Captain America did not want to hurt the feelings of the thunder god, and therefore, despite being able to do so, he decided not to raise the hammer.
