Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever director and writer Ryan Coogler faced a mammoth task. Not only did work on the sequel to the mega-successful "Black Panther" coincide with the peak of the corona pandemic, but Coogler and his team also had to find a way to deal with the tragic cancer death of their leading actor Chadwick Boseman before filming began.

In the run-up to the theatrical release, many critics were already unanimous: "Black Panther 2" is a visually stunning and emotional tribute to the Marvel star, who died far too young. And that is exactly what is now being honored by the audience, which flocked to the 30th MCU blockbuster:

"Wakanda Forever" was able to bring in a fantastic 180 million dollars in the US alone on its opening weekend. It set the best North American November release ever by a film - a record previously held by The Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire.

The result is well behind that of the first part, which has become a cultural phenomenon and was able to flush around 202 million dollars at the Box Office in 2018 but is absolutely remarkable, especially in view of the huge challenges that the production was confronted with.

DWAYNE JOHNSON CONGRATULATIONS
Incidentally, with the US recording of the first few days alone, "Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever" already put the current DC competition in its place. After a whole month, the Dwayne Johnson action film "Black Adam" only grossed $151 million in its country of production.

Johnson himself not only took the whole thing calmly but even warmly congratulated those responsible in a tweet in which he was enthusiastic that the film made for so many happy cinema-goers:

ONLY DOCTOR STRANGE 2 STARTED 2022 BETTER
The new Marvel spectacle is also a high-flyer in other comparisons, which in 2022 will only be eclipsed by an in-house film by the comic forge. The Black Panther sequel had the second-best theatrical release in the US this year, surpassed only by its MCU cousin Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which grossed $187.4 million overseas in its first weekend.

And that's not all: If you look at the entire pandemic period, "Black Panther 2" lands in a respectable third place for the most successful launches, behind the aforementioned "Doctor Strange 2" and the multiverse fun "Spider-Man: No Way Home".

ALSO A HIT IN THE REST OF THE WORLD
But Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is also extremely popular outside of the USA. After the opening weekend, the film grossed $330 million worldwide. That's all the more surprising given that it didn't launch in the often lucrative Chinese market, which contributed over $100 million to Part 1's international box office earnings. It is currently still generally unclear whether "Black Panther 2" will even start in China, as the number of US blockbusters running there is strictly regulated and limited.

But even so, the comic adventure managed the fifth-best international start of a Hollywood film of the pandemic era. Seen in the entire MCU cosmos, "Black Panther 2" was placed in the upper middle field with the twelfth most successful MCU start outside the USA.

Now it remains to be seen whether "Black Panther 2" in India and globally can ultimately advance into similar spheres as the debut, which was the first major comic blockbuster with a completely black head
