The actor plays Bruce Wayne in the film about the Dark Knight directed by Matt Reeves.

The DC cinematic universe continues to expand with new movies and one of the most anticipated is The Batman. The film, directed by Matt Reeves, stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. The film ended its filming on March 14. The Warner Bros. franchise based on the heroes and heroines of DC Comics already had a Batman among its ranks: the one played by Ben Affleck in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

To this must be added the Bat-Man who will be brought back to life by Michael Keaton - after Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns - in The Flash, the solo film about the Scarlet Sprinter starring Ezra Miller and directed by Andy Muschietti. So what about Pattinson's Dark Knight? How is the existence of him understood in the DC cinematic universe?

Earlier this year, DC Films explained how Pattinson's and Keaton's Batman will coexist in the franchise. Characters already known to fans such as Gal Gadot's Diana Prince / Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry / Aquaman will continue to experience adventures in what is now called Earth-1. While The Batman, Pattinson's film, will take place on Earth-2. The Flash, on the other hand, will connect both universes. This was confirmed by Walter Hamada, president of DC Films, in The New York Times.

What does this mean? Well, the DC movie universe will introduce the multiverses. Or as Hamada himself described it: "parallel worlds in which different versions of the same character exist simultaneously."

The appearance of Earth-2 in the franchise has become notable again recently after the announcement that Warner Bros. had canceled the films New Gods by Ava DuVernay and The Trench -spin-off 'by Aquaman- by James Wan. As THR stressed when announcing that these projects were not going ahead, The Batman will be set on Earth-2. This alternate universe was introduced in comics in the 1960s and has already appeared on CW series such as The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl.

The fact that The Batman plays with the multiverse begs the question of whether the Superman ‘reboot’ that J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates will also take place on Earth-2. It seems like a logical choice, especially after rumors suggest that this character will be played by a black actor. In the DC comics, Val-Zod is one of the last Kryptonians on Earth-2 and the second to wear Superman's cape. At the moment, there is no confirmation from the study that this will be the case.

The Batman, a film in which Bruce Wayne has been the Dark Knight for only two years, features Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / Enigma, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The film plans to hit theaters on March 4, 2022. Above, don't miss the trailer.
