The actor, who brought Finn to life in the latest Star Wars trilogy, has also defended the work of director J.J. Abrams.
John Boyega, an actor who put Finn to life in the new Star Wars trilogy, has criticized Disney for leaving aside the characters who represented diversity in the franchise. Specifically, hers and that of her partner Kelly Marie Tran, who took on the shoes of Rose Tico. In addition to expressing his unease about how his and Tran's role were dealt with in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Episode IX of the franchise -, he has also wanted to defend the director of the film J.J. Abrams.

"Everyone has to leave my boy alone," Boyega says at GQ about the filmmaker. "I wasn't even supposed to come back and try to save this. You get involved in projects and they don't necessarily have to like everyone. But what I'd say to Disney is not to bring out a black character, market it to make it much more improved in the franchise than it is, and then put it aside," he continues.

Boyega has also compared how daisy ridley (King) and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) characters and Tran's and Tran's characters were treated. "You knew what to do with Daisy Ridley. You knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these characters. But as for Kelly Marie Tran. As for John Boyega. Give them," he explains.
Finally, the actor has also stated that he does not keep a good memory of his work in the franchise. "So, what do you want me to tell you? What they want you to say is, 'I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience.' I'll take it when it's a great experience. They gave Adam Driver all the nuance, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let's be honest. Daisy knows. Adam knows. Everybody knows that. I'm not saying anything new," he concludes.

Some fans were also not very happy with how certain characters were treated in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Many criticized the appearance of Rose Tico, who, despite the importance in the previous installment Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in Episode IX had very little time on screen.
