The film's biggest challenge was to move in a new direction within a vastly expanded Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). There have been more than 40 movies and TV shows in the MCU so far, and the audience will hardly be able to remember the old events. "Brave New World" comes at a time when we have had to be reminded of what happened in the last decade, and this revisiting sometimes creates a little bit of discomfort. However, the film fails to embrace its new approach and gets badly mired in old familiar elements.
The film feels like a political thriller for the most part, involving true agents, ulterior motives, and fraud. But when Sam Wilson has his turn to face his new role, a large part of the film begins to feel light and shallow. The action scenes are simple, and Sam's use of a pair of jetpacks doesn't seem very interesting. Despite this, Anthony Mackie's acting ability is the film's strength. Sam's real strength lies in inspiring others and uncovering the best qualities inside him, and that's one of the things that makes him different from Steve Rogers.
Another notable character is Isaiah Bradley, who is significant as a black superhero, and his influence brings a deeply humanistic message to the story. His role is quite effective despite the short screentime, but he is introduced in the film in a slightly flat manner. However, Carl Lumbly's performance is incredible, and he plays the human aspect of the film very strongly.
The biggest surprise of the film is the contribution of Harrison Ford, who played the character of "Thunderbolts" Ross. Ford's character comes up with a new twist as a diplomatic mediator and his performance shocks the audience at times. His performance makes it clear that he is making an extremely effective contribution towards the direction of the film, which provides a significant and strong thrill.
In general, "Captain America: Brave New World" shows a lot in its critical message and deep understanding of the characters, but it remains in many places tied to the old material, and the need for more connections and innovation is felt. This film gets a good start, but it does not take a completely new step in every sense.
